Habitat for Humanity ReStore needs your help

November 25, 2009

Today I received an email from Carol Potter, Director of ReStore Operations Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce.
They are trying to get a grant to help get started with their E Waste Recycle Program. This is for both the Owen Sound and Hanover ReStores.

A Full Circle Idea: Our hope is to set up a licenced E-Waste site for Habitat for Humanity ReStores, Grey Bruce. E waste will be collected locally and recycled through a central recycling agency . The funds generated will be directed to Habitat for Humantiy Grey Bruce, a charitable housing organization. Habitat for Humanity will then further engage the community to build safe, affordable homes with partnering families.

This IDEA fulfills a desire to both promote and protect our environment. It responsibly diverts a list of recyable products that are presently heading for landfill sites. It encourages education of our enviornmental options and promotes strong environmental stewardship. Read more.

This is a win win situation. You donate your old, unused e-waste to ReStore. They recycle it and the money goes directly to Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce to build safe, affordable homes for families.

They need your vote. Please vote. The project is outlined on the page where you go to vote. I voted to help. I hope you do as well. Thank you.

Artistic Floral Creations and Designs on Display At Meaford’s Newest Flower Studio
Warm reddish hues, sparkling bronze and crisp linen whites are all on display as Meaford’s newest business blooms. The Flower Studio opened its doors last week, showcasing floral creations from artisan and respected florist Shirley Small. Fresh, silk and dried arrangements are all available at the new location which is eloquently housed at 24 Trowbridge Street West, Unit 7, beside Trowbridge Cleaners.

One and all are invited to the Grand Opening of the Flower Studio on Saturday, November 21st from 1 – 4pm. Come visit the new store and enter a chance to win a weekly prize with every purchase!

True to its catchy new ‘Scents of Fun’ slogan, the sweet floral arrangements of the Flower Studio could be found emanating far beyond its Meaford home base recently. By request, The Flower Studio supplied flowers for an event attended by Royalty. Prince Charles, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and former Ontario Premier Ernie Eves were all in attendance at the Evergreen Brick Works for a local sustainability forum as part of Prince Charles’ Canada-wide royal tour.

For more information, or a personal tour, please contact the Flower Studio at 519-538-9800.

Larry Mercey Trio Concert

November 16, 2009

The combination of professional, genuine family entertainment with a decidedly local flavour has an almost sold-out performance later this month at Central Westside United Church in Owen Sound.

Larry Mercey Trio heads the bill with George Lonsbury Jr., and Al Alderson bringing country music originals as well as old favorites. Juanita Wilkins also brings her trio to provide some songs with a folk flavour. Providing some levity in the afternoon of music is Country Clem (Don Vair) a funny man reminiscent of Red Skelton.

The variety concert on November 22, runs from 2:30 p.m. To 4:30 p.m. Followed by a reception when the audience may meet and mingle with the performers and enjoy refreshments in the Friendship Room.

Larry Mercey and his trio bring the country legend’s sound that has been around since 1957 when Larry and his brother Ray pursued a singing career. With brother Lloyd they morphed into The Mercey Brothers in 1961, releasing chart singles and winning Best Country Artist Juno’s from 1969 to 1972 and being inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989.

Juanita Wilkins is a songwriter and likes to perform music that reflects her southern Ontario roots. Many will have caught her act at Summerfolk this year.

Don Vair’s Country Clem has been enjoyed throughout southern Ontario and he is also an accomplished pianist and guitar player. We are sure his down home humour will be appreciated.

Tickets for the show are almost sold out! News has got around about Larry Mercey bringing his trio and guests to Owen Sound next Sunday (November 22, 2009).

Several bus loads of visitors are coming to the Rhythm & Pews performance at Central Westside United Church and then taking in the Festival of Northern Lights, an award-winning display of coloured lights flanking the banks of Sydenham River in Owen Sound.
