COPA for Kids Day at the Billy Bishop Regional Airport
September 21, 2009
Saturday was a very busy day at the Owen Sound Airport!
COPA Flight #144 held a COPA for Kids day on Saturday September 19th, 2009 at the Owen Sound Billy Bishop Airport.
Pilots and ground crew volunteered their time, airplanes and fuel to
help fly children age 7-17 for a free of charge motivational aviation experience. Pilot briefing began at 8:30am and flights started at 9:00am and went until 4:00pm.
Our family got to the airport about 1:00 p.m. and registered upstairs in the terminal building. Then, we went downstairs for our briefing (ya, the parents got to sit in on this part of the experience), which was done by Jay Murdoch. He explained how airplanes fly to the crowd of kids and took questions. Next it was time to go upstairs and meet the pilots who would be taking the kids on their first flight.
Originally our kids, were going to go up together, but split up at the last minute so that the remaining six in the group could all go up at the same time.
Michael got to go for his first flight in a helicopter with his pilot, Dwayne Henderson and two other boys. Allana was going flying in a plane with two other kids and their pilot, Jim Vamplew. Plus to add to the excitement, they both got to sit up front with their pilots!
(Please accept my apologies if I have spelled your names wrong!)
Here’s some photos that Ross took while the kids were flying.

Here’s what they had to say…
My experience flying was amazing! Especially how I was at the Billy Bishop Airport to above my house within seconds it seemed. The water was turquoise that far up in the air. After we crossed the bay area, the pilot, Jim, got me to take the yoke! I was kinda mentally freaking out, but when I got hold of it he told me what I had to do. I thought I was going to crash the plane because every time he told me to pull it back I would do it… but too fast. Then, we would start flying up. It was definitely scary with me flying. I did start feeling a little bit sick to my stomach… that didn’t pass until later when I got home. I think I started feeling that way because every time we would go over a hill the pressure changed and there was a bump. The day was a perfect day to fly though because it was clear and not very windy.
The whole experience was amazing and I’m hoping that I get to fly a plane again someday.
Allana (age 14)

My COPA flight started in the Billy Bishop airport basement where we learned the basics of flight, and then we met our pilots.
My group rode in the helicopter. There were two other boys besides me and Dwayne, our pilot.
When we got in the air it was amazing. Everything looked so small.
When we went over the bay it was a whole different story, the water was so beautiful and you could see the current in the water.
We went all over town then we went back to the airport.
Michael (age 11)

Personally, I would like to thank everyone involved in making this event happen. What a great thing to do for kids! Thank you.

Meaford to unveil it’s Bronze Scarecrow Statuette
September 17, 2009
Artist Gunter Neumann is pleased to announce the unveiling of a Bronze Scarecrow Statuette on October 2, 2009 at 5:15 pm a few steps to the north side of Meaford Hall, on Sykes Street.
Mr. Neumann sculpted the statuette during approximately 200 hours. The original was sculpted in clay. Once finished a rubber mold was produced in Toronto and the casting in bronze was created in Tweed, Ontario. With the financial help of community businesses, service clubs and individuals it was possible to cover the cost of close to $10,000.00. The leading contributor was the Bank of Nova Scotia. However the donation of the stone base by Owen Sound Ledgerock Corporation, major contributions by local Service Clubs, a number of Business enterprises and many individuals all made the project possible. The statuette itself is approximately 42” high. It will stand on a block of stone 32”high so that the overall display will be 6’+.
An acknowledgement panel will display all contributors. The engraving on the stone base will read:
SCHUBIRD, Welcome to Meaford.
The unveiling ceremony will precede the annual Meaford Scarecrow parade and family festival. The media and general public are invited to witness the unveiling and to listen to the words of local dignitaries.

Santini to attempt to Escape from UNESCO
September 16, 2009
“World’s Most Extreme Escape Artist” to attempt escape from UNESCO National Canadian Historical Site
On Sept 24th at 8:00 PM, Owen Sound escape artist Steve Santini, officially named “The World’s Most Extreme Escape Artist” by the legendary Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, will put his skills to the ultimate test when he is manacled with over 60 lbs of shackles, chains, and historical restraints and is then locked into one of the Garrison Cells at Fort Henry National Historic Site in Kingston, Ontario.
Santini will first be searched with a metal detector to ensure he has no hidden tools or other devices to help him escape and the cell will also be searched. The door to the cell, which normally locks with a single padlock will be triple locked with three padlocks and Santini will be given a 30 minute time limit in which to free himself from his restraints and the cell. This escape will be attempted in full view of the media who will be able to witness it and record it via a barred window mounted into one wall of the cell.
Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario, is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) site that has never seen any prisoner incarcerated there escape from it’s Garrison Cells proper. Removing any “magic” or “illusion” from his escape attempt, Santini plans to use a combination of pain control, contortion, physics, self hypnosis and science to free himself from the manacles and cell.
In July of 2009 Steve Santini garnered national media attention when he freed himself in just 8 minutes from a “Death Row” condemned cell at the historic “En Prison” in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. In a career first, Santini did this escape in full view of the assembled media.
Likewise, in 2003 Santini earned national media coverage when in 13 minutes he liberated himself while heavily manacled from a Death Row condemned cell at the former Carleton County Gaol in Ottawa. Santini escaped from the very cell that had formerly housed James Patrick Whellan who was executed at the jail for the assassination of Thomas D’Arcy McGee, one of the founding fathers of Canadian Confederation.
Steve Santini is available for pre escape interviews by contacting his manager Robert Baird at 416 887 2151
