This area has hundreds of wellness providers who offer a wide range of options for healthy living. The first-ever one-day Wellness Roadtrip will provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about energy healing, reiki, naturopathy, Native healing and spirituality, massage, yoga, dreamwork, aromatherapy, quantum bio feedback, ion cleansing, meditation, fitness, nutrition and more. On Saturday August 29 from 10:00 – 5:00, nine wellness venues in and around Owen Sound will open their doors to provide hands-on demonstrations, presentations, product samples and answers about their specific services.

Organized by a local alliance interested in expanding understanding of the many available local health options, the Wellness Roadtrip is based on the familiar artists’ studio tour model. United Way Backpack Campaign

August 20, 2009

The United Way’s backpack program is falling short of goal.

In light of a demand that represents an increase in over 400 more children in 2009 than in 2008, the United Way is struggling to keep up.

The United Way raised over $21 000 in 2009 to provide 1240 backpacks; to date the United Way has raised just over $14 000 in 2009 with requests topping 1600.

“Some of our larger donors from 2008 are simply not able to give this year” explains United Way Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn, “we’ve had amazing support from the community, the challenge is that due to the increase in need, we need even more.”

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to purchasing supplies and backpacks.

“Parents are calling and asking when they can pick up the backpacks for their children… I just don’t know what to tell them” Dobbyn laments. Both Counties have seen an increase in welfare cases as laid off workers run out of EI. “Poverty is new for a lot of middle class families in our region, we’re trying to help them cope as best as possible”

Donations can be made at any TD Bank, Meridian Credit Union or Staples Business Depot in Owen Sound. Donations of supplies and funds can be made at the United Way office 380 9th Street East Owen Sound or by calling 519 376 1560 during regular business hours.

Below is the story we originally ran on the Backpack Campaign…

It’s back to school time again… well, in a couple weeks… We had the opportunity to talk to Francesca Dobbyn, Executive Director of the United Way of Bruce Grey about their annual Backpack campaign. It gives all kids a great beginning to the new school year by starting on a even playing field.

If you’d like to get involved or make a donation, here’s how to get in touch.

Dragon’s Den – Meaford Style

August 11, 2009

Look out CBC, Meaford is doing it’s own homegrown version of the very popular “Dragon’s Den” on October 21, 2009 at the Meaford Hall.

The Dragon’s Den is being presented by The Meaford & District Chamber of Commerce.

In a nutshell, 7 contestants will pitch their new business ideas to a panel of 5 Dragons in front of a live audience for criticism, compliments and hopefully some cold, hard cash. The Dragons are comprised of five local business people.

To participate, your submission must be handed in to the Meaford Chamber before September 15th at 4:30. (Submissions must include a one-page synopsis outlining their business idea, specifying how it relates to the Meaford Economic Development Strategy. You can pick up your applicant package at the Meaford Chamber office.) They’ll go through the sumbissions and selected applicants will be interviewed between September 28 – 30th. The finalists will be announced on October 5th.

So, Dragon’s Den should create a lot of buzz in the community and beyond. The Meaford Hall gets to showcase the event. And, great new business ideas will be unvailed. Sounds like a project to get excited about.

Recently we had the opportunity to talk to Jamie Pettit of the Meaford and District Chamber of Commerce. He told us all about it and how we can get involved.

Recently were asked about Farmer’s Markets…

We heard there is a farmers market in Chesley on Tuesdays, but I haven’t been able to find any information. We will be in Owen Sound from this Sunday to Friday and would like to explore any markets etc going on in that area. Any assistance you can give me will be most appreciated.

We’re fortunate to have quite a few fabulous markets in the area throughout the week. Here are some links to tell you all about the area markets, when they’re open and their hours of operation.

theOwen.com recently ran a post about markets.
